Did you run vcvarsall.bat in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC
before executing nmake? If not, have a shot. Cl requires a few DLLs which
aren't in PATH.

I would suspect binary file corruption or a hardware problem (memory
error or disk IO errors).
A compiler error is very unfrequent. As you saw, many people have
compiled with no or very minor problems.

Check on another computer with different binaries (compilers). If it is
a hardware problem it should show up with other programs aborting
unexpectedly and randomly, etc.
