Well, it looks like others have had similar problems, in similar 
contexts.  Indicates to me a makefile/compiler problem and not a Botan 
problem, so I will retire my questions from the forum.

I have a call into Matt Plec, the person submitting the question to that 
forum, to see whether he ever found a solution to this compile problem.

(For me the environment variable GLIBCXX_FORCE_NEW postpones the crash, 
but does not prevent it altogether.)
