I would recommend taking a look at NaCl's crypto_box in particular:
http://nacl.cr.yp.to/index.html -- or off-the-record (as Sandy mentioned)
if you want real-time chat. I would not recommend trying to implement OTR
yourself as it is pretty tricky to get right.
